2017 project pan roulette

thought i’d start the year on the right track!  doing a project pan roulette with the products in my yearly use it or lose it helped me to use up items instead of sticking with the same things.  so here we go with another!

in honour of 2017 i’ll be working through 17 products at a time in this project.   i used random.org to choose 17 items off the list.  because there are so many products in this project – more than 200 and i’ll be adding more as the year goes on, i won’t be posting the full list.  but if you’re interested in seeing everything that will potentially be in this project pan i’ll include a link to my google doc, 2017 makeup which has a sheet for my inventory, my use it or lose it for the year, my project pan roulette and my inventory numbers.

2017 makeup inventory & yearly goals

welcome to 2017!!

i’m starting this year by acknowledging how large my collection has become and setting some goals for myself for the year.

i decided to reorganize my space and in the process decided to update my inventory – which i haven’t updated basically all year.  some of the numbers really surprised me – and some shouldn’t have.  i really do have a larger collection than most people…and definitely larger than i need.

i went up in almost every category.  some categories increased by a crazy amount – i’m looking at you lip products!!!  in the end i’m happy with what i have but want to work on using up the items in my collection before they go bad.

1. use up products on the use it or lose it list
2. do not purchase any eye liner
3. only purchase products that i truly want and will use – no falling for the hype!
4. use up primers, concealers – only purchase new ones when there are 2 or less in either category
5. use up foundations – only purchase new foundations if there are 3 or less
6. use up single shadows – do not purchase more
7. do not purchase lip liners or lip gloss
8. rotate through products
9. declutter things i don’t love
10. have fun playing with what i do have!

palette of the year 2016 finale

 

when i started my first palette of the year in january i never would have thought i could finish a palette! ever!!! but not only did i finish 1…i started to work on a 2nd palette (and a 3rd which i decluttered).

some shades were easier to use than others and this definitely helped to realize what i do and don’t like.  i did have to step out of my comfort zone to use a couple of the shadows – but these palettes were fairly neutral so it was easy to do.  the hardest shades for me were the darker shades.  i prefer lighter and brighter shadows but in the end i made the most of what i was using!

i found that the too faced shadows did hard pan a couple of times.  i used a piece of tape to pull the hard pan off and was able to carry on using the shadows.  i also found a difference in the pigmentation and texture of the shadows.  there was a definite difference between the mattes and shimmers – which makes sense.  however there was a difference between similar finishes and some shadows were hard to use, picking up little product.  i found the darker shades did not want to be on my brushes and i had to work extra hard to get pigment on these shadows.

this is definitely something i will continue to do in the new year!

this month seems to have flown by!! i really focused on this palette the last week and a bit because i feared i wouldn’t finish!!

palette of the year update 10

here we are with the final update before the end of the year!!! which means i have just over a month to kick this palettes booty!!!  when i started this challenge at the beginning of the year i never thought i would even come close to finishing one palette.  here we are essentially a year later and not only have i completely finished a palette but i’m almost done a second!!!

since the last update i finished 3 shades, hit pan on 2 shades and expanded the pan on 2 others.  i’m still not sure i’m going to get through this – the pink shade in particular has me thinking its going to be hanging on FOREVER!! but i feel super good about the progress i’ve made.

use it or lose it project pan roulette update 3

in july i decided to start a project pan roulette with items from my 2016 use it or lose it.  with only 2 more months to go i’m not sure i’m going to finish everything but i’m making progress and that’s what counts!

palette of the year update 9

if you’ve been following my palette of the year posts you know that i’ve already used up the too faced matte eye palette and i’ve moved on to   too faced boudoir eyes soft & sexy eyeshadow palette

what i’ve found with panning eyeshadow palettes is i have months where i think i can’t do this….and then there are months where i think i’ve got this!  this month is the latter.  i’ve had some serious progress and i can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

i’m not sure i’ll be able to finish the whole palette by the end of the year – i mean i only have 2 months left – but i think i can get pretty darn close!

this month i’ve hit pan on 2 more shades, widened the pan on one shade, made a big dip in a shade and finished one!

use it or lose it project pan roulette update 2

 

in july i decided to start a project pan roulette with items from my 2016 use it or lose it.  i started with 68 items but added some more in.

palette of the year update 8

so far this year i’ve already used up the too faced natural eyes palette.  for the most part i quite enjoyed it.  i decided to add in 2 more palettes once i finished that one –  the  too faced matte eye and the too faced boudoir eyes soft & sexy eyeshadow palette

i have officially decided to declutter the too faced matte eye palette.  i found the shadows hard to work with.   i felt like i had to work super hard to get any product on my brush and then it was patchy.  the shadows also hard panned super easily.  life is too short to use eyeshadow you don’t love.  so off it goes to hopefully find a new home with someone who will love it.

the boudior eyes has been easier to use.  while i don’t love it, i’m motivated to use it and find the shades are easy to work with.  i did scrape out the one shade (french tickler) that i knew i wouldn’t use.  it was basically chunky sparkles with a tiny bit of colour.

sample september finale

it seemed fitting to me that i post the finale of sample september on a sunday…since saturday didn’t happen 😛

i feel like i kicked ass and took names on this challenge! i used up more than i thought i would.  i did have products at various stages of use – from things that were brand new to things that only had 1 or 2 uses left in them!

so without anymore pointless babble

7 summer flings finale
